WAUKEGAN - Lake County Democrats in Waukegan rejected their county party chairman State Senator Terry Link in Tuesday's primary for Waukegan Mayor. Link, who has been chairman of Lake County Democrats since 1992, moved from nearby Vernon Hills to Waukegan with plans to hold two taxpayer-funded jobs simultaneously as Waukegan's mayor and the 30th Legislative District's senator.
But the Democrats in Waukegan didn't latch onto Link's plans. Instead, City Clerk Wayne Motley received 1505 votes, Sam Cunningham 1345 and Senator Link came in last with 1037. Common Sense in Illinois 10th website points out that Link received only 20 early and mail votes, while Motley received 372 and Cunningham 381. Those numbers show that Senator Link's organization performed embarrassingly weak, especially for their longtime Democrat Party chief.
Motley will face Waukegan's current Mayor Robert G. Sabonjian, who is running as an independent, in April's general election.
