In a cliched political statement expected from most U.S. Senators, Mark Kirk reiterated his "no" vote on Secretary of Defense nominee Chuck Hagel today, saying Hagel's "past views and statements place him far outside the bipartisan mainstream on key issues like Iran sanctions, European designation of Hezbollah as a terrorist group and the U.S.-Israel relationship. While I appreciate and respect Sen. Hagel's record of service to our country, especially as a decorated combat veteran, I cannot support his nomination.”
With the Senate controlled by the Democrats, Hagel was confirmed as the new U.S. Secretary of Defense in a 58-41 vote.
