A newly proposed law in Illinois would mandate kids to attend school starting at age 5. Currently, parents have the right to determine when their child starts school between the ages of 5 and 7.
Backers of the proposed law say it is necessary to get children in the habit of going to school as early as possible and to force parents to cooperate. They assert it has nothing to do with expansion of the teacher's union or job security for public school teacher.
