While federal tax rates stay the same regardless of where the
taxpayer lives, the same is not true for state and local taxes. The tax
burden of taxpayers living in different parts of the United States
varies due to differences in state and local income taxes, property
taxes, sales taxes and automobile taxes. Using 2011 data H&R Block lists Chicago as the 6th most highly taxed city in the United States.
The top ten cities with the highest tax burden for a hypothetical family of three making $50,000 in 2011:
- #10 Boston, MA
- #9 Burlington, VT
- #8 Providence, RI
- #7 Louisville, KY
- #6 Chicago, IL (family of 3 pays approx $6,412 in taxes per year)
- #5 Los Angeles, CA
- #4 Columbus, OH
- #3 Philadelphia, PA
- #2 Newark, NJ
- #1 Bridgeport, CT
