In March of 2012, Illinois became the first state in the nation to sell lottery tickets on the Internet. Now the Illinois Retail Merchants Association
wants to find out whether that move is having an impact on more than 23,000 retailers across the state that belong to the trade
association.
Among other things, the retailers association wants to find out whether making lottery tickets available for sale online may have impacted sales of lottery tickets and other merchandise at brick and mortar stores.
Brick and mortar stores benefit from selling lottery tickets in several ways. Retailers get a 5 percent commission on every lottery ticket sold, plus a 1 percent cut of any prize money of $1,000 or more sold at their stores.
