WASHINGTON DC - Thursday, Illinois applauded as their junior senator Mark Kirk returned to the Capitol with great dignity after recouperating a year from a debilitating stroke. Kirk climbed the 45 stairs to the US Senate entrance, and his Senate colleagues lined the stairs in respect.
Then, when the senators gathered inside, Illinois' senior US Senator Dick Durbin made a fool of himself as he honored the newly re-elected Senate Majority President Harry Reid. Durbin quoted a song about Reid's Nevada, and referred to the rock band "The Killers":
Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) paid tribute on Wednesday to the long career of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) by quoting lyrics from the Nevada state song, as sung by The Killers.
“Deep in the heart of the golden west, home means Nevada to me,” Durbin said, according to tweets from those listening.
Durbin, the Senate Majority Whip, also called them a “young rock group.” At age 31, lead vocalist Brandon Flowers is the youngest member of the group that was started in 2001.
