The bankruptcy of Hostess, maker of Twinkies, Ho Hos, and also bread products, has affected what students in Springfield District 186 are eating. While Twinkies aren’t part of the average school lunch, bread sure is. And the district was contracting with Hostess for it. They received warning that the company was destined for work stoppages and possibly bankruptcy in November. When that happened the district resorted to using tortillas, dinner rolls, and bagels in place of the bread. Pete Sherman is a spokesman for Springfield public schools:
SHERMAN: “We shortly thereafter began purchasing bread from a local company while we prepare a more permanent bid proposal for a long-term bread provider.”
Sherman says he’s not sure how long it could take for the district to secure a new bread contractor. But for now, it’s back on school kids’ food trays.
