SPRINGFIELD - Illinois remains the only state in the union that does not allow its law-abiding citizens to defend themselves by carrying concealed weapons. As the number of illegal shootings in Chicago nears the 500 mark, this story from South Carolina becomes more and more relevant, especially for women who are late night employees, often alone and defenseless against criminal thugs. Police in Columbia, South Carolina, report that an unnamed woman was working the night shift alone at a convenience store when three armed men came in. The robbers began firing their guns in the air, apparently to scare her. It didn’t work. While they were shooting at the ceiling, she grabbed her own pistol and started shooting at them. She shot one of them in the chest, and all three fled in terror. Police caught the one with a chest wound and took him to the hospital. They believe she might have shot one of the others, as well. And here’s a final fact that gun control advocates would not want me to report: “The clerk was not harmed.”
