The Illinois Department of Corrections has hired 135 new correctional officers with a base salary of $42,000 plus benefits and pension.
Department spokeswoman Stacey Solano tells Lee Enterprises newspapers that the new officers will replace some employees who've left the job during the current fiscal year. As of last week, Illinois had 6,669 guards on the state government payroll.
