The U.S. House race between Democratic candidate David Gill and his Republican opponent in Illinois' new 13th District is one of the most competitive in the country as control of the U.S. House of Representatives could be at stake. Today, Gill's campaign announced that he has received the recommendation of the Illinois Education Association and the endorsement of the Illinois Federation of Teachers.
Public school teachers and postsecondary educators across the 13th congressional district are united in supporting Dr. Gill and his commitment to quality public education.
“I am honored to receive the support of the educators in this district,” said David Gill. “In Congress, I will give the teachers, education support professionals, faculty and staff working in public schools and colleges in my district a voice. I will fight to ensure that students, educators and parents have the tools they need to succeed here in Illinois and across the nation.”
Dr. Gill supports serious federal investments in education from prekindergarten to college and career training. The Bloomington ER physician will outline his education plan in a press conference today in Champaign announcing the recommendation from the IEA. The IEA has recommended support for both Republicans and Democrats, including current Representative Tim Johnson from the 15th congressional district in the past.
“Without a well-educated, well-prepared workforce, our nation can’t hope to compete and our children won’t enjoy the opportunities their parents or grandparents did. Congress, under the irresponsible direction of misguided priorities, has been gutting funding for education from preschool to post-graduate and career training programs. Our nation’s ability to inspire the next generation of American scientists, doctors, engineers and teachers is undermined by these radical, short-sighted policies. Education is at the core of investing in our future and building a strong middle class.”
