CHICAGO - First released in a dozen Chicago area theatres a few weeks ago, Dinesh D'Souza's documentary "2016: Obama's America" has now surpassed the top gross of the year for a documentary (excluding nature films) with an eye-popping $9.2 million. The film raked in $6.3 million this past weekend when showings expanded nationwide.
Obama's America is now the top conservative documentary of all time, beating out Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed ($7.7 million).
2016 expands on sections of Obama's autobiography, "Dreams from My Father," and the director Dinesh D'Souza's findings for his book "Roots of Barack Obama's Rage." D'Souza filmed his travels to Kenya and Indonesia, where he traced Barack Obama's history as reported in his autobiography. D'Souza's research turned up associations with radical Leftist mentors, family members and colleagues that had effect on Obama's ideology and public policy agenda.
Chicago area viewers report sold out showings this past weekend and shocked audience reactions.
"I heard audience members saying, 'We've got to stop him, we've got to stop him,' as they were coming out of the theatre," one 2016 viewer at a Woodridge theatre reported.
From Will County, a viewer reported on her Facebook Page that she saw the movie 2016 Sunday night. "EVERYONE NEEDS TO SEE THIS MOVIE! I took my daughter and after the show was over I stood right up and gave a little tea party style speech to everyone in the audience. I totally embarrassed my daughter but everyone was yelling "amen" and other people started speaking out too.
"We have got to get people fired up and get them out of their chairs and out in the public telling people the truth about what is really at stake in this election! Everyone can do something!!"
