In Washington DC, the nation's capital, abortion is currently legal for any reason until the moment of birth. On July 18th, 2012, the Judiciary Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives approved legislation to end that policy. The Committee voted 18 to 14 along strict party lines.
The bill is called H.R. 3803 (District of Columbia Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act) would make abortion impermissible in Washington, DC, after 22 weeks of pregnancy, unless necessary to prevent the death of the mother. A Senate companion bill (S 2103) has been introduced and has 30 co-sponsors.
"A vote against this bill amounts to a vote to ratify the extreme policy currently in effect in the nation's capital, where abortion is completely for any reason until the moment of birth. Under the Constitution, members of Congress and the President, are ultimately accountable for this extreme policy," said Douglas Johnson, National Right to Life Legislative Director.
The bill will now go to the floor of the House for a vote.
