CHICAGO - Gov. Pat Quinn’s office has issued layoff notices to nearly 600 workers in the state’s troubled child welfare agency, despite vows to restore funding in an effort to prevent staffing cuts.
The state’s largest employee union said it was notified of the layoffs in the Department of Children and Family Services late Thursday.
The action comes several weeks after Quinn vetoed $57 million from the budget lawmakers sent him in an effort to offset cuts to DCFS. The money had been earmarked by lawmakers to keep prisons and other facilities open, but Quinn is moving forward with those closures. He argues the funds would be better spent on protecting children.
