For the past two months the SouthTown 9.12 Project Chicago has been asking local residents to donate to their Summer Supplies for Soldiers. But now they are down to the last week and supply donations as well as monetary donation are down from their anticipated goal.
The following are excerpts from two Marines that sent emails after receiving SouthTown 9/12 Project packages:
“Dear Mrs. Weir, I am currently deployed in Afghanistan. I couldn’t help myself from getting a little teary-eyed. Whenever I hear of someone like you doing anything to help us I have to write them and tell them how thankful my fellow soldiers and I really are. Knowing that someone took time and cost them however much just to give it away and make someone like me have a little better day. What you are doing is a great thing. Thank you for everything you are doing.”
And another -
“I got the package today and it was amazing! It’s truly a blessing that you were able to pull this off. I know the guys were so happy. I made sure though everyone got something and we all here at Camp Vance, Afghanistan, think of you as our new angel, watching over us and makes us fight that much harder, knowing that we will have support from our people back home. I wish I could keep going on with how much this means to us but we’re having a memorial in 15 minutes for all the soldiers that had fallen in the mass attack last night that left one of our bases burned to the ground. This package couldn’t have come at a better time. It put smiles back on their faces. Thanks so much for everything!”
It's still not too late to help. From Lucie Weir, Southtown 9.12 Project's coordinator:
Just by purchasing a single tube of sunscreen, a packet of lip balm, a bag of hard candy, a bar of soap or a used DVD at your local dollar store can put smiles back on the faces of our military men and women. I ask you to please give generously. On July 20th all donation boxes will be collected and the supplies will be readied for shipment.
