SPRINGFIELD - Monday, eight lawmakers called for the General Assembly to override Governor Pat Quinn's planned closure of four downstate prisons - in Murphysboro, Tamms, Joliet and Dwight. Senator John O. Jones said he was concerned not only about the jobs lost in his district, but the public's safety.
Illinois Statehouse News has requested information from the prison system on alleged attacks within the prisons that the lawmakers cited as dangers due to overcrowding. At Monday's press conference, the lawmakers said they were concerned those attacks could increase with Quinn's projected prison closures.
Governor Quinn's office said prison population has been shrinking and the facilities to be closed are old and outdated.
