SPRINGFIELD - Public Affairs' Jeff Berkowitz had a chance to sit down with AFSCME boss Henry Bayer last week in Springfield to talk about Illinois' pension crisis. Bayer's not happy with Governor Pat Quinn and not thrilled with Speaker Madigan, either. In the interview with Berkowit, Bayer proposes AFSCME's ideas for fixing the pension mess - repeal the tax deal the Illinois legisalture made last year with the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Sears, set into action a progressive income tax system, raising taxes on the wealthy and corporations.
This is a can't-miss interview in which the veteran organizer doesn't flinch while advocating AFSCME's wealth redistribution demands. Bayer accepts Berkowitz's copy of a free market classic, which, Berkowitz told Illinois Review, Bayer returned immediately after the interview concluded.
