There was a time in the 1950s when most liberals celebrated their tolerance of unpoopular ideas as a virtue of their philosphy. But gradually in the last 50 years, the extremist left-wing professors who dominate most college campuses let their students know in ways both subtle and ham handed that tolerance is not for the reactionary ideas of conservative students or their publications. But left-wing students can engage in all manner of hate speech that will be tolerated as long as it serves "progressive" ideology. Now intolerance rather than tolerance has become the new virtue of the Left. Here are some examples.
Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow is often made fun of on the Daily Show and other left of center cable panels of "progressive" talking heads because he has used his celebrity status and large TV audience to bear witness to his Christian faith even in sometimes flamboyant ways. This is not cool according to atheist Bill Maher who often mocks Jesus Christ on the air for doing "magic tricks" that were not really miracle as he makes funs of the Holy Trinity. But Maher is a secular Jew who mocks his own Jewish religious heritage as well. Of course one can find examples of conservative voices who are also intolerant but the Left has raised intolerance of dissenting views to the level of a public crusade.
Without any effort to engage in advance consultation with the administrators of Roman Catholic-affiliated hospitals, HSS issued in-your-face regulations demanding that the church reject bow to the all-powerful state and reject its own long-standing principles and teaching of faith in order to bend to the power of unelected dogmatic secular zealots in the Obama Administration. There are many examples of official Obama Administration hostility to religious institutions based primarily on their beliefs. Exteme gay advocates are not content only to disagree with religious teaching that counsels in favor of a traditional family unit as a good role model, but they have disrupted church services, demonstrated at places of worship, and why exactly? Because they are willing to accuse anyone of "homophobia" if they refuse to endorse the gay lifestyle one hundred percent. That is zero tolerance for anyone who believes in traditional moral teaching that even most gays endorsed only 20 years ago. Check out the gay publications of 1992, no one referred to gay "husbands" or "wives" or "spouses" or used the word "marriage." The gay PC language of 1992 was all about "partners" and "civil unions" and the right to be free from anti-gay violence. But now some gay advocates are the ones who threaten and intimidate any Christian who differs with them in the public square. Of course gays have a right to be protected from violence but so do Christians. Moroever, Christians have the right to their beliefs and that includes the right to withhold approval of a lifestyle they do not condone.
Americans United for the Separation of Church and state misrepresent the nature of their intolerance on a routine basis. Their actions are seldom in favor of only a separation of church and state but go much further to open secular hostility to even the mention of God in public places. The federal courts have deliberately confused the recognition of God as the author of liberty with "an establishement of religion" as discussed in the First Amendment. There are some honest judges who understand that the founders only wanted to prohibit an officially endorsed state religion similar to the King as head of the Church of England but did not want to endorse secular humanism as the official faith of America. Given official prosecution against nativity scenes on public land or tablets that re-print the Ten Commandments in or near public buildings, it is clear we are long past the idea of no official denomination. We have one and its version of the Holy Trinity is Atheism, Agnosticism, and Supreme secular humanism as the state religion of government.
