Republicans U.S. Senator Mark Kirk and Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford will hold a press conference Friday that could force Illinois' Democrat-controlled Illinois General Assembly towards a Plan C or D. The Democrats' have been heard for months to whisper hope that the Obama Administration would help rescue his home state by pushing for a federal bailout. Kirk must be hearing the same thing in DC. He will announce the No State Bailouts Resolution today.
From Kirk's office:
On Friday, U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) will announce the introduction of Senate Resolution 188, the No State Bailouts Resolution. The resolution, authored by Senator Kirk and 14 original cosponsors, expresses the sense of the Senate that the States, as sovereign entities, retain control over their spending and taxation, and are responsible for their own debts. Senate Resolution 188 makes it clear that a federal bailout of the states will not occur, forcing Illinois and other troubled states to make tough decisions here and now. Illinois Treasurer, Dan Rutherford, will join Senator Kirk at the introduction announcement. Rutherford recently announced that he did not approve of Illinois taking on additional debt with the state already facing a $45m budget shortfall.
More to come on this ... especially anxious to hear U.S. Senator Dick Durbin's response.
