A group of Republicans in the Illinois House said Thursday that one of their plans to save the state money is eliminating the office of lieutenant governor, which would save the state about $2.5 million. State Sen. and gubernatorial candidate Matt Murphy recently suggested that at the very least the line item for the currently vacant post should be eliminated from the 2010 budget.

Great idea Murphy. While you're at it, let's eliminate HB0664 (95th G.A.), and all the foreclosures its caused.
Wait...you sponsored it? Oops. Guess you probably don't like my saying that.
But I think we should eliminate the Lt. Governor role. I'll address that with Governor Andrzejewski, who doesn't believe in pushing people out of their homes legislatively with monstrous tax increases.

I agree it's absolutely a huge waste of taxpayer money to fund the Lt. Governor's office & staff when the post is vacant.
However, I would disagree with eliminating the position completely. New Jersey just created a Lt. Governor position because they were tired of the "five governors in a week" fiascos they get whenever one of their Governor's resigns unexpected and the NJ Senate pro-temp becomes "acting Governor" while trying to balence his legislative duties at the same time. If we hadn't had a Lt. Governor when Blago had been impeached, it would have been a much more chaotic disorderly power grab.
The thing we should do in Illinois is delegate actual powers to the Lt. Governor so it's not a useless ceremonial post that can do absolutely nothing unless the Governor drops deads, resigns, or is removed ala Blago. The Vice President of the U.S. gets to cast tie-breaking votes in the Senate, but in Illinois this provision was eliminated from the Lt. Governor's job in 1970. Why? The Governor can't even appoint a new Lt. Governor if the office is vacant.
The office of Lt. Governor needs some serious reforms to justify the kind of salary he/she gets. The Lt. Governor should truly be an assistant Governor.

Surprised no post tonight on Hynes looking likely to run for Governor. Good for us the nastier the better.
Many states have no LT Gov it just needs to be defined who takes over in case another Rod happens.
