On the afternoon of the last regularly-scheduled day of the Illinois General Assembly, the Illinois House voted down SB 2252, an income tax increase from 3 to 4.5%. Another income tax increase to 6% passed by the Illinois Senate late Saturday night, but may not be called for a floor vote in the Illinois House. Time is running out for any income tax increase during the regularly scheduled session. If the legislature is called back on June 1, any legislation would need a 2/3 majority rather than 50% plus 1 for passage.
The Illinois House Republicans stayed solidly opposed to the Democrats "Hail Mary" budget proposal as it passed tonight with one vote to spare SB 1197 (Democrat Golar changed to a "no" after the roll call), legislation that would authorize this fiscal years remaining funds to state agencies, and will permit the state agencies to function at the status quo until the legislature is called back later this summer, or during the veto session.
