-- BEYOND TRAGIC: Toyota tops Ford and Chevy in U.S. sales
http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/article/20090105/NEWS03/901050305/1004/NEWS03
(THE ARTICLE: For the second consecutive year, Toyota Motor Corp.'s namesake brand likely will beat General Motors Corp.'s Chevrolet and Ford Motor Co.'s main nameplate as the top seller in the United States. Before 2004, Ford had been the top-selling U.S. brand for 18 years, and Ford and Chevy have jockeyed for the top spot since then. But both domestic brands lost out last year when Japanese rival Toyota topped Chevy by 41,296 vehicles in 2007, selling 2.3 million vehicles. Falling sport utility vehicle sales that came with spiking gas prices earlier this year helped widen Toyota's margin over Ford and Chevy. Through November, Toyota sold 1.8 million cars, 185,200 more vehicles than Chevrolet. Even when excluding Toyota's Scion brand - which sold 109,777 vehicles through November and is included in Toyota brand sales - Toyota leads the industry, with 1.7 million car and truck sales. While Detroit carmaker GM did not return calls seeking comment, Ford has maintained that it is more focused on becoming profitable again than maintaining sales leads. "In times like these, who's on first is less important than who's still on the team, meaning who's still selling cars and trucks," said George Pipas, Dearborn-based Ford's U.S. sales analyst. Meanwhile, don't expect to see Toyota touting its status as America's best-selling brand. "We don't find that it's a very strong motivator for consumers," said Toyota spokesman Mike Michels, who said the automaker is more focused on building customer loyalty and a profitable business. "The feeling is always that if we attend to all the basics, and we happen to rise in the rankings, then that's fine. Then that's just a measure of all the other things that we did." "If Toyota comes out on top, so be it," said Erich Merkle, lead auto analyst at Crowe Horwath. "But at the end of the day, you've got to be able to understand what the market is looking for and ask yourself: 'How are you going to compete profitably in the auto industry?' ")

-- Obama's stimulus package should include a federal income tax rebate of at least $1,000 for purchase of GM, Ford, and Chrysler vehicles made in America - Dave Diersen
I want to be the last one to defend the mistakes that GM, Ford, Chrysler, and UAW have made over the decades. But the answer for their mistakes is not to drive them out of business. Over the decades, foreign governments, the United States government, state governments, county governments, township governments, municipalities, etc. have given trillions of dollars in tax subsidies and other incentives to foreign car manufacturers. Over the decades, the news media, limousine liberals, Toyota Republicans, union haters, etc. have given trillions of dollars in free advertising to foreign car manufacturers. All that has done terrible damage to GM, Ford, and Chrysler. "Free trade" gives foreign car manufactures an unfair advantage over GM, Ford, and Chrysler. America's automotive industry is vital to its national security. America cannot let foreign countries, foreign companies, foreign organizations, and foreign individuals take control of the design, manufacture, sale, and service of all the vehicles that Americans can buy. Because of the damage that governments, news media, limousine liberals, Toyota Republicans, union haters, etc. have caused, if GM, Ford, or Chrysler are forced into Chapter 11 reorganization bankruptcy, Chapter 7 liquidation bankruptcy will soon follow and foreign car manufactures will buy what is left. Obama's stimulus package should include a federal income tax rebate of at least $1,000 for purchase of GM, Ford, and Chrysler vehicles made in America. That rebate should remain in effect until it equals a) the trillions of dollars that foreign governments, the United States government, state governments, county governments, township governments, municipalities, etc. have given in tax subsidies and other incentives to foreign car manufacturers plus b) the trillions of dollars that the news media, limousine liberals, Toyota Republicans, union haters, etc. have given to foreign car manufacturers. Again, because of the damage that governments, news media, limousine liberals, Toyota Republicans, union haters, etc. have caused, if GM, Ford, or Chrysler are forced into Chapter 11 reorganization bankruptcy, Chapter 7 liquidation bankruptcy will soon follow and foreign car manufactures will buy what is left. Those who would let foreigners take control of America's automotive industry are making it clear that they would let foreigners take control of everything in America. Hopefully, Obama has enough clout to successfully encourage Americans to be American, to buy American, and to stop foreigners from taking over another vital American industry.
