Dem Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran Steps to the Fore Again
by Cal Skinner
Remember the McHenry County meeting with Ohio Sheriff Dan Beck spoke to the Illinois Minuteman Project? That's the one that the Crystal Lake Holiday Inn banished
when the McHenry County Peace Group said its members would demonstrate
on Route 31 and the Crystal Lake Police Department demanded the
Minutemen pay for protection.
Eventually, the meeting was held at McHenry County College. The police were there in force, but the Minuteman didn't have to fork over money to exercise their Freedom of Speech.
In a follow-up article last December, I noted that Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran, a Democrat, was seeking training for his deputies so those who were found to be illegal aliens could be deported. (This is not necessary, according to Sheriff Beck.)
Friday, Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran popped back in the news on the illegal alien front. Pointing out that 20% of those in his jail were illegals, he complained that he did not yet have the power to send them to ICE for deportation. He applied for such authority 14 months ago, the first Illinois sheriff to do so.
He said shipping them out would save over $4 million a year, according the the Chicago Tribune.
Here's a twist I hadn't hear of before:
“Once Immigration and Customs has a detainer on an inmate, it pays $65 to
$75 daily to house the inmate in the jail.”
Along the way, he blasted Mayor Richard Daley and Springfield and Washington politicians for not doing more:
"How many public school kids did we have to bury last year because of Mayor Daley's inability to keep a lid on crime?”
Now, Democrats are wondering if he is a “born-again Republican.”
You see, he also endorsed the Republican State's Attorney.
Curran was also the guy who spent a week in his own jail to scope it out, coming out calling for prison reform.

Sunday night at 8, Sheriff Mark Curran will be on Tom Roeser's WLS Radio show.

Our immigration policy should have narrow focus on the undesireables and not on those coding software programs or cleaning up the office at night or flipping burgers for us. A BIG brother approach is not only contrary to our principles of a free market, but also more expensive than we can afford.
And rather than playing Mother-May-I with the ICE, Bush should repeal Nixon's centralization of power in the INS/DOJ. Prior to Nixon, The Curran approach was SOP.

Bob, I agree with you on the first three...that should be deported.
As far as can't afford the big brother approach - give me a f'n break. After all the bailouts of the past few weeks, even the highest estimates would be a drop in the bucket. I still think it would be more affordable in the long run to do what needs to be done and I don't think it will cost as much as some say.

We should deport everyone we catch. Simple as that. Bob, the only reason why you don't want an illegal who programs, is because your job will be in jeapordy, but what about plumbers, electricians, carpenters who belong to a union and do quality work. They are replaced by day laborers who skimp on work. America has gone to the dogs. Deport them all, limit H1B and H2B visas.

We can continue the 'raids' and the deportations but nothing will change without armed military on our borders and proper staffing of all departments involved in legal immigration. The raids and the mortgage fallout have resulted in the self-deportation of a group of illegal aliens who represent the more moral component - what is staying in the United States is the immoral component.
It is time to get to work to elect honest people to office who will properly secure our borders to "fix" the illegal alien problem.

I agree with the last two posts. Bob probably thinks that this country has law-abiding illegal aliens, but that's an oxymoron, similar to "law-abiding drug dealer" or "law-abiding bank robber."
I was in the navy for 21 years, and I was at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base (which is between Los Angeles & San Diego), 1996-'98. While I was there, I noticed that the base usually had about 5,000 marines who don't have much work to do. The base is about 40 miles from the border, that hundreds of people cross, illegally, each day. The marines should take turns guarding the border.
