Today, 9th Senate District nominee Brendan Appel, along with Cook County Commissioner Tony Peraica and State Senator Matt Murphy, spoke to concerned citizens at a tax protest, held in front of the James R. Thompson Center, in downtown Chicago.
As of midnight on July 1st, Cook County sales taxes ballooned to 10.25%, making it the highest sales tax rate in the United States. Inside the Chicago Central Business District, the sales tax grew even higher, to 11.25% with an additional 0.25% tax on restaurants.
“The statistics are clear – since Rod Blagojevich became governor and my opponent, Jeff Schoenberg, became a state senator in 2002, Illinois has sunk to 43rd in the nation in job growth, 40th in personal income growth, and 46th in Gross Domestic Product growth,” said Appel.
“The last thing this ailing economy needed was this massive tax increase from Todd Stroger which came on the heels of a series of tax increases, all sponsored and passed by Democrats, to bail out the woefully mismanaged CTA,” added Appel. “The good news for the taxpayers of this county and this state is that there is an election coming in November, and the people have the opportunity to voice their rejection of Democrats' tax and waste economic policy."
