Oberweis Out? Not Quite
Eww, Rich, your "party" slip is showing . . .
We got a call early this afternoon from a friend who was confused after reading on Rich Miller's pay-to-read Capitol Fax blog that Republican Jim Oberweis was dropping out of the 14th CD race. Only thing was....it wasn't true. Miller's comment was his idea of an April Fool's joke.
And it seems the Oberweis campaign isn't chuckling. It's not that campaign spokesman Bill Pascoe has no sense of humor; after all, he responded with a tongue-in-cheek, chuckle-inducing Mary R. Holstein press release to GOP primary opponent Chris Lauzen's noteworthy "dead cows" mailing.
It's that Miller -- who boasts of being politically and journalistically objective -- revealed his inner, partisan child -- by pranking conservative Oberweis who faces a November re-match against Miller's candidate Bill Foster.
Miller's post is below ...
* Meanwhile, in other astonishing political news, perennial losing Republican candidate Jim Oberweis has vowed never to run for office again. Oberweis has spent millions of his own money on several losing races, including a special congressional election loss to Democrat Bill Foster just last month.
"I'm so done with politics," Oberweis said yesterday to a group of astonished reporters. Asked what he would do next, Oberweis said he planned to export a herd of cows to China and corner that nation's burgeoning premium milk market.
It was unclear who would replace Oberweis on the ballot, but the Republicans promised they would find a legitimate candidate. "We've grown increasingly disappointed with those self-funding millionaires," said one state party official. "Sure, they can pump tons of money into their own campaigns, but we want to win this one."
