Even the NYT Recognizes the good news in Iraq!

Well, it seems as if our friends at the New York Times are even recognizing the positive changes coming out of Iraq.  Of course challenges remain, but no one (even, I dare say, the President) expected such a rapid change in the situation on the ground.

Now, will all American's unite to win this war, or are there still politicians with a vested interest in an American loss?

My hats off to Sen. John McCain for being one of the few Republicans to stand behind the surge at the height of its unpopularity.

There is much to be thankful for in Iraq, but the realist/pessimist in me is concerned about the retaliation factor. Bragging about the new peacefulness incites the jihadists to targted violence.

I would prefer quiet advances rather than the NYT blaring progress in the ears of those who would stop it.

What is the definition of "win"?

Winning the war on terror is like winning the war on crime or drugs or poverty. We will always have some of it with us.

Is the best short term response the best long term strategy? But if we don't survive the short term, what good is a long term alternative?

So, to a large extent it is an expectations game, and a game of time frame.

When I was in Iraq, Sept. 2004-Mar. '05, I noticed good news that wasn't reported by any journalists. Whenever an American dies in Iraq, reporters ensure that they tell us, but they rarely report how many insurgents are killed by Americans. I was in the navy, in a marine infantry battalion. When we arrived in Iraq, we had about 1,200 people. 13 of the marines died, and they killed about 250 Iraqis. Reporters don't tell about the Iraqis deaths because they don't care about doing their jobs well, or they know the information and don't want to tell us.

This has the makings of a great marketing campaign for Gary, Indiana:

"They're killing less of our people this month than they were a few months ago!"

Some good news. The dead are still gone, to be joined soon by the newly killed.

True. Its called war

Adam, God bless you this Thanksgiving. I hope you get the chance to call your family today.

Thanks Brother. God Bless you too. I'm home for Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. Missed them both last year!
