Dear ***** :
Thank you for contacting me about employment non-discrimination. I appreciate having your views on this legislation.
The Employment Non-Discrimination Act would prohibit employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. This measure would make it unlawful for employers to fire, refuse to hire, or limit the opportunities of any individual based on that person's sexual orientation.
Fair and equal treatment of all Americans is a cornerstone of our society and our political system. Unfortunately, despite great progress, the struggle for civil rights and equal treatment under the law continues today for many citizens.
I am committed to ending discrimination based on race, religion, and sexual orientation. The Employment Non-Discrimination Act would help us achieve that goal. It would not provide special treatment for people who are gay or lesbian. It would simply take their sexual orientation off the table as an issue in hiring, firing, and other employment decisions.
I recognize the strength of many people's convictions regarding this issue. I appreciate having your views and hope that you will continue to feel welcome to contact me in the future on matters of importance to you.
Sincerely,
Richard J. Durbin
