Homeschool lesson assignment for this week: Make a call to State Senator Kimberly Lightford and politely tell her that parents are doing an outstanding job with their children at home without the public school's oversight.
Time to nip Senator Lightford's contemplation of home school oversight in the bud. This week. Make a new friend. Call Senator Lightford at (708) 343-7444, her Westchester district office.
Today's Oak Park Leaves story says lawmakers weren't aware how much liberty homeschoolers have until the paper pointed it out to her.
One of the most prominent is State Sen. Kimberly Lightford, D-4th, of Maywood. Lightford is the chair of the Senate's Education Committee.
"I would have assumed to some degree that we had accountability over how many home schoolers there were, where they were located, and that they would be tested," Lightford said.
She was so surprised that she said she is planning to delve deeper into the issue.
"I'm glad you sparked this," Lightford said. "You just really put me into a situation where I'd be interested in looking at legislation. "So you don't even know your child's aptitude or ability or where they are? At what level?" she asked, still sounding astonished. "That's scary."
