DAILY HERALD
-- Naperville City Councilman Richard Furstenau Cleared of Battery Charges -
(FROM THE ARTICLE: While the criminal case may have adversely affected Furstenau’s bid for state Senate in 2006, it did nothing to derail his city council re-election campaign. He was sworn in for a third term last week.)
-- FULLER: "It didn’t take long for new Wheaton Mayor Mike Gresk to have his first flare-up at a city council meeting."
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The encounter is reminiscent of the last year of Mayor Jim Carr’s tenure when Mahady last found himself embattled with the conduct of council meetings. “The rules are for the public, but their own rules are not for them,” Mahady said when contacted later. “I wanted to know what was involved in each of these agenda items.” Mahady said he was unable to access any information on the issues the council would vote on Monday night other than the agenda itself. “I hope this doesn’t go to show the type of regime we’re now going to have,” Mahady said. Once Mahady left, the council consulted with City Attorney Jim Knippen, regrouped the remaining portions of the consent agenda and passed them in one vote. “I had Mr. Knippen check, and we’re not paid by the vote,” joked Councilman Howard Levine. Gresk joked that the encounter meant his administration had begun. “I really feel like the mayor now,” Gresk said. “This is good.”)

CRAIN'S CHICAGO BUSINESS
-- Higher oil prices make Illinois coal viable: DOE study -
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The report was applauded by U.S. Rep. John Shimkus, R-Collinsville, who has proposed legislation to create federal loan guarantees for up to six pilot coal-to-diesel plants. "I am pleased that a real financial study by (the department) has shown that a coal-to-liquid facility can be a reality,” he said in a statement. “The facts are that we need additional fuel supply. Using our natural resources, in an environmentally safe manner, can help provide some additional supply. And Illinois is a prime location for such a plant.”)

-- McCain vs. Romney - Stephen Spruiell
(THE POSTING: The New York Sun’s Ryan Sager just asked McCain to comment on Mitt Romney’s public criticism of the immigration compromise. McCain responded, “Maybe I should wait a couple of weeks and see if [his position] changes.” McCain then got in a one-two punch that hit both Romney’s alleged exaggerations about his hunting experience and his employment of immigrants for landscaping work: “Maybe he’ll get out his small varmint gun and drive those Guatemalans off his lawn.”)
