Last week, Governor Mitt Romney (R-Massachusetts) vetoed a plan for his state to provide universal preschool. Before that, California rejected an attempt to place a universal preschool program on the November ballot. While a couple of other states offer preschool for 4 year olds, Illinois continues to be the national leader in pulling toddlers away from their mothers.
Over the weekend, National Review's Carrie Lukas wrote about the dangers of universal preschool. Her points are exactly the same we pushed on legislators this past spring. They fell on the deaf ears of every House member and all, except ten, who dwell in the Senate chambers.
At the very least, our Republican caucuses in both houses shouldn't have enabled Blagojevich's impetuous spending spree with our tax dollars.
Any incumbent or candidate who claims they are or want to be fiscally responsible while promoting universal preschool for 3 and 4 year olds should be spanked.
