"Senate Joint Resolution 12 is a testament to what seven out of ten Americans believe -- that Old Glory deserves respect and protection," said Maj. Gen. Patrick Brady, U.S. Army (Ret.) and chairman of the board of the Citizens Flag Alliance.
But Illinois' illustrious U.S. Senator Dick Durbin embarrassed his home state once again when he declared in debate that a vote on the flag amendment was nothing more than an election year political ploy.
"This isn't a vote to protect Old Glory," he said, "This is a vote to protect old politicians. . ."
The U.S. Senate will need 67 votes to send the amendment to the states' for the ratification process.
The flag is a symbol, not sacred in and of itself. However, desecrating the flag insults our nation, its history and those who have died for the American experiment. It should be honored.
At the risk of sounding corny, patriotic and mundane, let's fly our U.S. flags with pride this weekend. It's good to teach your kids to respect the Red,White and Blue.
It's something Senator Durbin's parents evidently forgot to do.
